To author content in the Melete Lesson Builder Tool, you may use one of two editors: FCK Editor or Sferyx Editor. FCK Editor is a light weight editor used in most of the tools of the system. It doesn't anything beyond a browser and having javascript enabled. The Sferyx Editor gives you powerful functionality (spell-checking, MathML markup, foreign language support, uploading of images and media, etc.), but in order to run it on the web, you must install a Java plug-in, as the editor is what is called a "Java Applet."
The Sferyx WYSIWYG requires several steps to enable it the first time it is used (more specifically, the first time you add a Content Section to a Learning Module.) Subsequently, the editor will load automatically from memory and be available for use.
If you have difficulties installing the Java plug-in, you can set FCK Editor as your default editor in the Melete Lesson Builder.
1. Test for Java. See if you can load a java applet of this puzzle or this magic cube . If you don't see the puzzle or cube, you must download the Java plug-in.
2. Download and install the Java plug-in — Go to: http://java.sun.com/getjava
Click on Download Now! and the download will begin. Follow the prompts to download to your desktop and install the software. You need to do this so that you can use the editor. Your system won't self-destruct. Don't worry.
Login to Etudes-NG >>Go to your Site >> Click on Modules >> Create a Module then click on Add a Section to that Module. The Melete Sferyx Editor will begin to load and you will see a message, “Loading Java Plugin…”
As part of the installation process when you attempt to use the Melete Text Editor for the first time (when trying to add a content section) since installing the plug-in; you will be prompted to Accept the Sferyx Editor Certificate.
You must accept the Sferyx Certificate by selecting "Grant Always." You will only have to do this once during the plug-in installation process, unless, of course, you use a different computer that doesn't have all this set up.
Please note that when you first start using the editor during a session, it takes a short while for the Java Applet to load and for the editor to load. It is not instantaneous, so just be patient. From then on during a session, the editor will be instantly available to you.
